The year is 1993, and the World Trade Center has just been bombed. New president Bill Clinton decides to use the attack as an excuse to invade Iraq. In order to expedite the invasion, his administration hunts for evidence of a connection between the WTC attack and Saddam Hussein's regime. Having captured some alleged terrorists, Clinton illegally orders them held without trial and tortured until they admit to a connection. The Clinton administration then goes before the United Nations and presents "evidence" gleaned from this torture to "prove" that Iraq is linked to terrorism and intends to strike the U.S. with weapons of mass destruction. Next Clinton terrifies the American people with a chilling State of the Union address during which he gives explicit descriptions of the WMDs that Iraq will bring to bear upon the United States if no action is taken. Having convinced a majority of Americans that Saddam Hussein was behind the World Trade Center attack, and having silenced any anti-war opposition in Congress by accusing dissenters of being unpatriotic, anti-American, and even siding with terrorists, Clinton invades Iraq. Post-invasion, no weapons of mass destruction are found. Embarrassed, Clinton orders more illegal torture to be used, this time on captured Iraqi soldiers, specifically to find evidence of a connection between Saddam Hussein and the terrorists who attacked the WTC. This war of choice, which destabilizes the Middle East and destroys the international reputation of the United States, costs the American taxpayer $2 trillion dollars and results in the deaths of several thousand U.S. troops and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians. The people who committed the attack on the World Trade Center remain at large. How would you react? Idea taken from EarlG...(sorry Earl) Red: Just because our government approves does not make it legal. There are US laws against waterboarding (ask Reagan he signed it), there are international laws against waterboarding (ask George HW, he signed that one). Say what you will. It is illegal. moreResolved Question: How can I meet men outside of my trailer park to date?
Recently, it's causing me problems, as I've already dated all of the men in our park. I went out with Billy Bob a few times, but he was way more into his taxidermy than he was me, and I just couldn't compete with a stuffed possum. Then there was Billy Bob Joe, but between his squirrel hunting and bass fishing, he just really couldn't fit me into his schedule. I had a fling with Billy Ray, but then his mom threatened to kick him out if he kept dating the "town tramp". (I never liked her any way). I thought it was going to work out with me and Bobby Joe, but his pregnant girlfriend put her foot down and that was the end of that. I tried a double date with Earl and Floyd, but they ended up getting into a fistfight after drinking too much while we were line dancing at the bar. I need a man who don't mind providing for me, and who also has a little bit of class. Also, a high school diploma or G.E.D.is a definite plus. I don't want someone who will be threatened by an educated woman. How do the rest of ya'll meet men? Should I try a dating service or maybe start trying to meet them at church? Seriously, help guy! I've only got so long that I can be having babies and stuff. I need to get on the ball here. moreResolved Question: Beat this joke for 10 pts.?
Chester and Earl are going hunting. Chester says to Earl, "I'll send my dog out to see if there are any ducks out in the pond. If there aren't any ducks out there, I'm not going hunting." So he sends the dog out to the pond. The dog comes back and barks twice. Chester says, "Well I'm not going to go out. He only saw two ducks out there." Earl says, "You're going to take the dog's barks for the truth?" Earl doesn't believe it, so he goes to look for himself. When he gets back he says, "I don't believe it where did you get that dog? There really are only two ducks out there!" Chester says, "Well, I got him from the breeder up the road. If you want, you can get one from him, too." So Earl goes to the breeder and says he wants a dog like the one his friend Chester has. The breeder obliges and Earl brings the dog home, tells it to go out and look for ducks. Minutes later the dog returns with a stick in it's mouth and starts humping Earl's leg. Outraged, Earl takes the dog back to the breeder and says, "This dog is a fraud. I want my money back!" The breeder asks Earl what the dog did. So Earl tells him that when he sent the dog out to look for ducks, it came back with a stick in its mouth and started humping his leg. The breeder says, "Earl, all he was trying to tell you was that there are more f***ing ducks out there than you can shake a stick at!" moreResolved Question: history help me plz .........................?

Dog Sport or Abuse?
Today I was sitting around talking with some friends about my future dog plans, which include, Agility, dock jumping and possibly NALC conformation shows. NALC is the single breed registry for the Catahoula Leopard dog. I mentioned that if I could I would also manage hog baying competitions the main one being Uncle Earl's down in Louisiana. Of course I had to explain exactly what this all was, while I should have expected it I was surprised to be called an animal abuser and asked how I could condone the abuse of wild animals. Uncle Earl's is pretty much the premier yearly hog baying competition in the US.Wild hogs are rounded up for the weekend event. Unlike banned hog fights/baiting competitions that were for catch dogs - APBTs and other bully breeds used when hunting hogs, In Hog Baying the dogs are only allowed to nip at the hog if it manages to get away, whereas other competitions the dogs are actually allowed to attack, grab onto and drag the hog down. The competition is to show what Catahoula's do best, make a ruckus and keeping the animal contained and controlled. The dogs themselves are protected by Kevlar vests, chest armor and extra wide collars, typical hunting gear to of course protect them from the hog. The Lousiana SPCA which drafted the law that BANS every other hog baiting event has exempted Uncle Earl's because the animals are not severely hurt and turned loose after the show, compared to say having to be killed because the dogs have pretty much MAULED the hogs. So how would you handle this situation and accusation? I know what I did, but I want to hear from others. Jennifer - Its not PACK sports. Uncle Earl's is a one on one sport. Two dogs are put in the ring the dog with the louder bay and handling of the dog wins the round. Noise from the audience is minimum because the dogs are judged based on just how loud they are and how the animals are controlled. Let's see actual contact with the animal while allowed is also penalized. A good bay dog can control a dog without touching it. Alix - Nope. The few vegetarian friends I have know I am pro hunting and have never been judgmental about it. Corn - Um what do you think these dogs do for a living? With the exception of Catahoulas who DON'T live on the farm, what they do at Uncle Earl's is what they do on a regular basis. Hog removal is big business, down south were feral hogs are a PAIN in the butt. Do I understand my friend's distress? Sure, but there fact remains I will take the occasional nip over having to watch a dog have to be PRIED off a downed hog. In hog-catching, dogs, usually pit bulls, are sent into a pen and timed for how quickly they can pin a hog. Once they bite, the dogs usually must be pried from the hogs with a specially designed bar. The practice — sometimes called hog baiting — outraged animal lovers and sparked prohibitions across the South. In hog-baying, the goal is for a dog to corner a boar in two to four minutes. The dogs sometimes bite, but it counts against them in scoring. I don't see people lining up to protest the treatment of sheep in herding competitions where the dogs are ALLOWED to make contact and not penalized in most cases. Oh and the DOGS are more likely to be hurt than the hogs. Not ever hog is going to go in the corner and stay there. dogs can get charged and flipped, not a pretty sight. Jen - I never said I thought it was funny. And neither do the people who have done this competition since it inception. This isn't about torturing animals this is about showing off what you dog can do in a controlled environment. Its not like they can go out in the woods and hunt them and take video camera with them. And unlike myself a wild animal can and will fight back, against one or two dogs. But hey if you have a real problem with it take it up with the SPCA who have NEVER received a complaint about Uncle Earl's compared to the other competitions. Corn I meant not Jen. And Corn actually this is EXACTLY what they were bred to do. Corning the hog and preventing it from running away is EXACTLY what is going on at this comp. Minus the freaking CATCH dog if the owner is using them. Righteous - Actually it does take talent because not EVERY Catahoula makes a good hog or cow dog. Sure it can be trained but the dog also has the DRIVE to do it. You can't make a dog who'd rather lay in front of the fire go out and work an animal that 3-5 times heavier than them. Just like conformation is the evaluation of the dog for its breed and breeding stock so is this. If you are looking for someone to work with in your breeding program you don't pick the nicest looking dog. you look for the dog who can do their job and has thrown pups who do the same. Jen - I am sure the owners from Canada and England and Australia see themselves as good ol' boys. Miracle - They were the same gear they wear when hunting. And I know plenty of hunters who DON'T use the armor. Unlike a sheep who is pretty unlike to be able to toss a dog skyward, a full grown boar can and will. I am sure plenty would let their dogs go in as is, but the fact remain every sport requires equipment human or dog. We don't send pro football players onto the field without padding do we? As for my friend I just pulled up video footage of hog baying. http://video.aol.com/video-detail/uncle-earls-hog-dogs-trials/2168150600 - Oh yes plenty of people SCREAMING and LAUGHING heard here. Righteous - depends on the pig. Even in the wild a wild boar will probably hold its ground and not move. Others in wild or competition will charge at the dog. The hogs are rotated out. They don't just leave it in there to be continually harassed. Controlling a tired hog would be absolutely counter productive. And if you don't think this takes talent why would they bother having the junior classes? And if you don't think it takes talent then you haven't see a dog under 12 months work like a dog twice it's age. Yes there is a junior class for this. MP - Yeah, Lions don't nip and last time I checked there were still people hunting lions WITH the use of dogs. That is what the Ridge was bred for. Your comparison doesn't work simply for the fact a Lion can easily kill a dog. Throw the hog and the dog together and if the hog is bold enough can KILL the dog. It has happened before. The average Cathaoula is only around 50-80lbs. The average wild hog is closer to 200 or more. Why make sheep herding into a sport? Is there some difference between working domestic livestock and a wild animal? Cuz I doubt the sheep really enjoy being herded by a dog they see as a predator. And its not just a sport, what you see at Uncle Earl's is also how the dogs are trained. Its not like the dogs are actually turned loose without any training. These dogs are exposed from birth just like Border collies are to hogs and cattle, so WHAT is the difference? Salt & Pepper - They are trained on farms, in the EXACT same manner usually unless the owner has the hog/pig actually caged. This is just an exhibition just like a herding trial is. Righteous - Border Collies herd, Catahoulas bay. Its the same thing. The only difference between Uncle Earl's and going out and hunting is about 3-5 more dogs, a gun, and whether the hog gets to live another day. And just what do you mean by "certain crowd?" Oh yeah because EVERYONE who comes to this and competes has to be a redneck hick hillbilly right? Hmm didn't know they grew those over in England. You can feel insulted all you want as a hunter, but you won't find a hog hunter who agrees with you at Uncle Earl's. And again how is baying any less valid of an exhibition and evaluation of breeding stock that anything else we do with our dogs? moreResolved Question: I hath just opened a peasant exhibition, would thou like to come visit?

here's a recap of the story below if anyone wants reference, what I NEED IS HOW THIS STORY RELATES TO REAL LIFE ENGLISH LIFE IN THE 15th CENTURY (1400s) REGARDING LIFESTYLES, CUSTOMS, BEHAVIOR, SOCIAL ASPECTS OF LIFE, POLITICAL STRUCTURES, ETC ETC. Much discontent exists after Uther's death with many people vying for power. At Merlin's insistence, the Archbishop of Canterbury invites all the lords and powerful men of the land to London at Christmas where the true king would be chosen. In the churchyard in London was a huge stone with a sword in it with the inscription, "Whoso pulleth out this sword of this stone and anvil, is rightwise king born of all England." No one could pull out the sword, until Arthur's adopted brother, Sir Kay, loses his sword, and Arthur pulls the one out of the stone. Ector admits that Arthur is not his son by blood and kneels in allegiance. After numerous "proofs" of his righteousness as king, pulling the sword named "Excalibur" in and out of the stone at Candlemas and Easter, he is crowned. Six Kings from the North, Lot, Uriens, Nentres and others, contest Arthur and refuse to bow to his throne. Merlin acts as defender and promoter of Arthur, as well as controller of situations by providing counsel. A battle between Arthur and his followers and the six Northern kings ensues where Arthur proves his might and prowess by killing many men with Excalibur. Merlin advises Arthur to join with King Ban and King Bors to fight the six kings who will come back to fight again. Arthur pledges to help Ban and Bors fight Claudas if they will align themselves with him. The men of Ban and Bors prove themselves worthy through jousts and tournaments with Arthur's knights. Arthur, Ban and Bors gathered their armies and secretly rallied together, at Merlin's advice, in the forest of Bedegraine. The six kings who fled after Arthur's coronation gather additional forces in five more Northern kings, bringing a force of fifty thousand men against Arthur at Bedegraine. Arthur's forces are told by Merlin when and where the eleven kings would strike, and are able to attack them by surprise at night when they were sleeping. Merlin provides counsel and battle strategy for Arthur, Ban, and Bors, and mighty (and gory) tales of battle ensue. Arthur proves himself in battle, doing "so marvelously in arms that all men had wonder." The feats of individual knights are recounted. Much explanation is given of the stages of battles and the valiant fights of Arthur's army. Many men die, but the 11 kings are still alive, and King Lot unites them all against Arthur by having them swear loyalty to each other. Merlin comes in, rebuking Arthur for not stopping the battle, claiming that out of 60,000 men Arthur has only left 15,000 alive. He counsels them to withdraw because the 11 kings will not be overthrown at this time, but predicts three years of peace. Arthur rewards his knights, Ban and Bors. King Arthur sees Lionors, an earl's daughter, when she comes to pay homage, and he impregnates her with a child named Borre, who will become a knight of the Round Table. King Rience makes war on Arthur's friend, Leodegrance, and so he, Ban and Bors depart for war in Northern Wales. Arthur's army fights King Rience, who flees after ten thousand are killed. Shortly after, Arthur sees the King of Cameliard's daughter, Guenever. Ban, Bors and Arthur part, leaving Ban and Bors to protect the north. Merlin prophesies the demise of the eleven kings (at the hands of Balin and Balan) who have gone back to their kingdoms to fight other battles against invaders. Arthur sees Margawse (Lot's wife who was sent to spy on Arthur.) He slept with her, not knowing that she was his half-sister, (Igraine and Tintagel's daughter). This union begets Mordred, Arthur's child. Arthur then dreams of griffins and serpents fighting him, but after a long battle, he slays these creatures. To forget the dream, Arthur goes on a hunt and chases a huge hart (a large male deer) until his horse dies. While he waits for a new horse to be brought to him, a strange beast comes followed by a knight named Pellinore. The knight's horse had been killed by the beast, so Arthur gives him the horse that had been brought, and Pellinore continues to follow the questing beast. Arthur offers to take up the quest for Pellinore, but Pellinore believes that the beast can only be captured by him or his kin. Merlin comes to Arthur in the guise of a 14-year-old boy and an 80-year-old man and predicts the destruction of the kingdom because Arthur "laid" with his own sister. Merlin also predicts his own "shameful" death by being "put into the earth quickly." To find out if Merlin is right about Margawse, Arthur sends for his mother, Igraine, who testifies that she did not know Arthur was the son of the king since Uther had been disguised when he came to her. Griflet, a squire, enters the court and asks Arthur for a knighthood so that he could fight the knigh moreResolved Question: what anime can someone recomend thats good please?

A newly constructed Barrow stood waiting on a wide headland Close to the waves, its entryway secured. Into it the keeper of the hoard had carried All the goods golden ware Worth preserving. His words few: “Now, earth, hold what earls once held And heroes can no more; it was mined from you first by honorable men. My own people heave been ruined in war; one by one They went down to death, looked their last on sweet life in the hall. I am left with nobody To bear a sword or to burnish plated goblets, Put a sheen on the cup. The companies have departed. The hard helmet, hasped with gold, Will be stripped of its hoops; and the helmet-shiner Who should polish the metal of the war-sleeps; The coat of mail that came through all fights, Through shield-collapse and cut of sword, Decays with the warrior. Nor may webbed mail Range far and wide on the warlord’s back Beside his mustered troops. No trembling harp, No tuned timber, no tumbling hawk Swerving through the hall, no swift horse Pawning the courtyard. Pillage and slaughter Have emptied the earth of entire peoples.” And so he mourned as he moved about the world, Deserted and alone, lamenting his unhappiness Day and night, until death’s flood Brimmed up in his heart. Then an old harrower of the dark Happened to find the hoard open, The burning one who hunts out barrows, The slick-skinned dragon, threatening the night sky With streamers of fire. People on the farms Are in dread of him. He is driven to hunt out Hoards under ground, to guard heathen gold Through age- long vigils, though to little avail. For three centuries, this scourge of the people Had stood guard on that stoutly protected Underground treasury, until the intruder Unleashed its fury; he hurried to his lord With the gold-plated cup and made his plea To be reinstated. The vault was rifled, The ring-hoard robbed, and the wretched man Had his request granted. His master gazed On that find from the past for the first time. When the dragon awoke, trouble flared again. He rippled down the rock, writhing with anger When he saw the footprints of the prowler who had stolen Too close to his dreaming head. So may a man not marked by fate Easily escape exile and woe By the grace of God. This is Old english from the book Beowolf. Lines 2240-2290. I have to translate it to modern english. So he sends the dog out to the pond. The dog comes back and barks twice. Chester says, "Well I'm not going to go out. He only saw two ducks out there." So, I am trying to hunt down the original versions of songs I've played throughout my lifetime in school bands, and am stuck. One of my favorite songs that I've ever played was Toccata, by Girolamo Frescobaldi and arranged by Earl Slocum. The problem is, Frescobaldi has many, many toccata's to his name and every source I have found with the Slocum arrangement only has the title Toccata without saying which one it is. So, what I'm asking is, does anyone know which Toccata it was that Slocum transcribed for band? I've experimented with toccatae Google is awesome, in searching for THE toccata, I stumbled across a crap load of cheap and free sheet music sites. moreResolved Question: I know you have heard this one lol?

49ers = B - Willis will learn from Mike Singletary, 'Nuff said! Staley will learn from Larry Allen. Hill is a big WR with a nose for the end zone. McDonald will contribute at DT as long as his knees hold up. Moore is a small DE with a high motor. Goldson has no NFL position as a DB and will have to make it on special teams. Cohen is the 2nd DT with bad legs drafted, not good! Brown is a smart, but unspectacular CB. A poor mans Randall Gay. Clayton is a selfish head case who never utilized his potential at RB. A wasted pick. Bears = A - Olson will be a nice pass catching TE. Bazuin is a blue collar guy who adds depth for run support. Wolfe is a 3rd down back to spell Benson. OLB Okwo will learn while playing special teams for a few years. Beekman is an explosive run blocker better suited as a C. Payne played HB, WR, P, CB and S in college. A incredible athlete still learning the FS position, he could be a star in a few years. Graham is a top flight kick returner who will team with Hester to give them a deadly duo. McBride is a small CB who will have to make it on special teams. Brant is a reach who may be a big sized guard. Bengals = B Hall is a great pick who will team with Joseph to give them a solid, young CB tandem. Irons is a confusing pick considering they just resigned Watson to a big multi-year deal. Is this their way of saying Perry is done? White can play both S positions and adds depth. Rowe is like Palmer. Big arm, tall, but not a scrambler. Unlike Carson, his decision making is questionable. Toeaina has an inconsistent motor, but good tools to be a run stuffing DT. Santucci can play C and both guard spots. Ndukwe will try to make it on special teams. Bills = A Hall of Famer Marv Levy pulls out a steal! Lynch is seen as a mix of Thurman Thomas/ Ken Davis and a better fit for their offense than McGahee. A real steal is Posluszny, who will either try to fill Spikes or Fletchers spot and is solid. Many had Edwards the 2nd rated QB behind Russell and he will provide a nice push for the improving Losman. Wright will push Thomas for short yardage carries. Wendling can play either S position and always seems to make plays. Schouman is a FB who catches the ball extremely well. Ah You is a oft-injured, finesse DE who will have a hard time making the team. They didn't draft a CB or WR, so it wasn't a perfect draft, but good. Broncos = B - As usual, they trade. This time it is a gamble. Moss will either be a solid edge rusher or miss completely. Crowder is solid, but unspectacular and a reach. Harris was a smart pick to learn from his aging O line mates. You can't blame them for gambling on DT Thomas. If it works out, they get a perennial Pro Bowler. Browns = A - Thomas was a no brainer who now helps give the Browns a good looking offensive line. They paid way too much for Quinn, who was rated the 5th best QB by me, but he is a hometown kid who wants to play at home. Just don't be surprised if Frye or/and Anderson beat him out now that they have blockers finally. Wright is a great gamble. If he really has cleaned up his act, he might end up being the best CB to come from this draft. An immediate starter if just in nickel packages. McDonald is best suited to play FS. Purcell is a DE who may end up a DT. Pittman needs to bulk up in the weight room if he wants a roster spot as a DE. Steptoe will have to make it as a returner. Buccaneers = A+ Bucs had a fantastic draft top to bottom! Adams is the best DE in the draft and will learn from the aging Rice. Sears was a great pick who will help protect whoever the QB is and open a hole or 2 for Cadillac. Piscitelli is a great athlete who can play SS or OLB in the Bucs cover 2 scheme. Their next John Lynch. Black has a chance to be a star and gets to learn from Brooks. Fastest LB in the draft. Jackson is a prototypical cover 2 CB and intelligent. Peterson is a big pass rushing DE who needs time to be groomed. Rice will teach him a few moves. Hayward is a perfect fit as a WLB on a cover 2 D. Denman is a huge OT with a long reach who needs maybe a season to develop. Hamilton played the cover 2 a lot at Virginia and may fit right in on dime packages as an extra CB. Darby will spell the Cadillac from time to time. The futures looking brighter in the Bay. Cardinals = B+ They needed any type of lineman on offense, but Brown may be a bit too high. He's more a guard than tackle. Branch fell right into their laps and may even inspire ex-Wolverine team mate McBride to play up to his potential. If that happens, the Cards will have a duo on par with the Jags 2 All Pro DT's. Davis is short and battles with his weight, but is a over achiever and will help somewhere. Special teams perhaps. Breaston will have to make it as a returner. Patrick may be a real steal. The intelligent TE is a natural leader and gives the Cards 2 young TE's with Pope, but plays H-back as well. Chargers = A - The theme today was that the rich got richer. Davis will put Parker on the bench by years end maybe. Weddle is a perfect pick who can cover the TE or WR. Waters was a 1st rounder last year until he blew out his knee. He will help on special teams as he learns. Chandler is a huge TE at 6 '7' 270, but doesn't block at all. Naanee is a physical, unpolished specimen who will be given time to develop at WR while he plays special teams. Siler stock dropped more than any other prospect. Going from a possible first rounder to almost undrafted. He is a leader and makes plays, but won't dominate at ILB in the pros. Stiff in the hips, he is strictly a run support type who must make it on special teams on a team deep in LB's. Chiefs = D They amazingly did not address their offensive line woes. Johnson should last about 4 games. Think a small Earl Campbell getting burned out too fast. Bowe fills a need as far as the WR corps is aging and he can block well too. McBride is a hard worker at DE who will fill in for Allen while he serves his suspension. Tyler was on many mocks 1st round and may be a DT than can be useful in KC finally after all the busts. Smith is a poor mans Kimble Anders and will play that role. Medlock was a confusing pick with OT Frye on the board. Tynes has a much stronger leg, but Medlock may be more accurate. If they go with Medlock, don't expect a FG longer than 45 yards in a dome, much less windy KC. Taylor is versatile and can play C or T, but is not strong and is mainly an average pass blocker. Allan is athletic at TE, but will he be able to jump from Div - III to the NFL? Crazy they didn't draft more O lineman! Colts = A + Remember how the rich got richer? The Colts got 4 guys who were 1st round picks on many mock drafts! Gonzales replaces Stokely without blinking. Ugoh will learn as he is groomed to replace Glenn in a few years. Hughes won the Lott Award and was maybe the best fit as a CB for a cover 2 D in the draft = A REAL STEAL who starts day 1! Pitcock will rotate with Booger and help solidify the run support. Condren is a self made gym rat who will pay his dues on special teams a few years. Session can play all LB positions, but may be best suited as a SS. Hall is an H-back type who may stick. Coe can play S or CB, which Dungy likes, but will have to stick on special teams. Dawson could be a sleeper. At 6 foot 270, he is quick, can run and will line up at DE. Cowboys = A - Jerry missed wheeling and dealing. Spencer adds depth to a deep, talented LB corp. Martin is a solid offensive lineman who needs a year or 2 to learn. Stanback is a gifted athlete who Dallas may envision as a Hines Ward type. Free is an athletic OT who may start right away. Folk is a good kicker who can also punt great. Anderson is a special teams monster who also happens to block and catch well at FB. Brown is a lock down CB who will allow Henry to move to FS to shore up the deep hole in the D. Ball adds depth at CB and special teams. Dolphins = B Ginn has speed. Point blank. He needs to learn how to be a better WR, but maybe after watching Hester, the Fins think Ginn will win a few on special teams? A reach that is a grand slam if it works out. Beck was rated the 2nd best QB by many and comes from a system than grooms NFL ready QB's. He may end up starting sooner than expected if Lemon is..well...a lemon. Satele can play guard or center and will start day 1. Booker will be a 3rd down back to spell Brown. Now...what to do with Ricky? Soliai is a 2 gap DT who will stuff the run. Mauia is a solid guard who needs time to polish his skills. Mormino is a C who can play guard too. Smith is a cerebral LB who plays all LB positions OK, but may need to make his bones on special teams. Fields is a P with a slow release, but strong leg. Wright is a tweener at DE who may need to move to OLB and make it on special teams. Eagles = A + I'm no Iggles fan, but even I recognize Andy Reids unpredictable genius. Kolb will be the first QB he can groom since Donovan and can take his sweet time with Feeley and Holcome as back ups. It's a hit or miss that won't hurt if it misses, but don't bet against Reid. Abiamiri is a solid DE who will lend to the rotation. Bradley could be a real steal if his knee stays healthy. At the least, he helps on special teams. Hunt is a real steal here! Finally they can sit Westbrook on short yardage and relieve him of about 10 carries per game to lengthen his career. Gaddis has all the FS tools, but needs developmental time. He gets to learn from future Hall of Famer Dawkins. Celek is a good clutch receiver at TE. Barksdale was on every scouts sleeper list. He is a big CB who may be a pleasant surprise or a special teams contributor. Ilaoa is one of my favorite sleepers. He is 5 8' 250lbs with good speed and ultra soft hands. He may flop or he may end up being an integral part of the offense. Style of running is compared to Emmit Smith. Falcons = A + The Petrino era starts out STRONG! Anderson was the best defensive player on the board and helps them day 1. Blalock was a 1st rounder who fell to them and will be a solid guard for a decade. Houston is another 1st rounder who allows Williams to go to FS and gives Atlanta a young secondary that may soon be the best in the NFL! Robinson is a big, fast WR who will push the 2 former #1 WR's to either play to their potential or sit. Nicholas will be a blitzer and special teams star. Milner is a fast TE who must learn to catch the ball consistently. Lewis is a run stuffing DT who can also play guard. He'll be tried at both. Irons was a nice pick up and should contribute on dime packages and special teams. Datish can play all line positions, but C may be his calling. Stone is an athletic freak of nature and their future SS. A REAL STEAL! Snelling also qualifies as a steal. He will replace Duckett as the short yardage back, can play fullback, blocks and catches well also. He will be used often. Maybe the best draft in Falcons history and all should make the squad. Giants = C CB Ross was a fine pick up. WR Smith will push the aging Toomer. Alford is a pass rushing DT who fits right is with the pass rushing happy DE's. DeOssie is a LB who can line up anywhere, as well as long snap. Boss is a huge TE with great hands. Koets in now the ONLY LT on the roster! He is solid in technique, but needs to hit the weight room. Eli should be on his back often! Johnson is a possible prospect at FS who will need to stick on special teams. Bradshaw is a small RB who the G-men hope can catch some passes that were intended for Tiki this year. Best move still appears to be made by Tiki retiring. Amazing they didn't address their O line woes with more vigor! Jaguars = B + Nice, solid draft! Nelson gives them a top flight FS who can cover WR's easily. Durant is a perfect fit for their scheme and gets to learn from Del Rio. Versatile too. Walker came off a torn ACL to catch over 90 balls. A nice possession type of WR. Podlesh is a big, athletic P who some think is the next Ray Guy. Smith is a leader, but a tweener DE who will have to move to OLB and prove his hip is healthy. Nwaneri is a project still learning how to play guard, but could be a real find in a few years if he develops. Gattis is always around the ball and a special teams star. Landri is an undersized lunch pail type who may find a niche as a pass rushing DT. Broussard is a big WR lacking much speed. Nkang is a project who will either be a LB or SS, but will have to stick thru special teams. Carnahan is a big OT whose knee may not have healed yet and might need a year on the practice squad. Jets = B+ Mangini took a cue from his mentor and ran his draft room like a mad scientist. Revis was the top rated CB by many and starts now! Harris is very solid and starts day 1 as well at ILB. Bender is a huge T who will be given time to develop. Stuckey has all the tools to be a special WR, but is inconsistent. Coles will be a good mentor. Gave up a lot for 2 starters. Which may be just fine! Lions = A - Matt Millen was wheeling and dealing. Johnson was a no brainer. Furrey goes to the slot and Roy Williams may be the #2 WR for the first time in his life. Stanton may of been a reach. Time will tell, but Martz needs to groom a replacement for Kitna within 2 years. Alama- Francis is a awesome athlete who could help Detroit for a decade at DE. Alexander can play CB or FS. A solid pick. Davis should start at CB day 1. Ramirez should start right away and make several Pro Bowls at guard. Baldwin will be a solid WLB who can play MLB as well. Robinson started at CB for 3 years at 'Bama and is a leader. Packers = B - A gambling type of draft. Harrell should be solid for years, but Jackson came out too early and Jones was a huge reach. He's big, but not fast or consistent. A 4th WR type at best. Rouse can play LB or SS and is either going to be great or have a bum knee that will prevent him from going to the next level. Barbre is a unique talent who will take a few years to develop as a guard. Clowney is a speedy, undersized WR who works the underneath routes well, but has inconsistent hands. Hall will have to make it via special teams. Bishop is a run stuffing LB. Crosby was a curious pick, considering Rayner had an excellent rookie year. Crosby could be better than any Packer kicker ever though. Rayner won't be unemployed long. The Pack is gambling Wynn finally stays healthy and realizes his potential, which could be several thousand yard seasons. Harris is a big TE who isn't fast and needs to improve his blocking. Panthers = A Fox had a good draft. They had to settle for Beeson, but he will be fine at LB. Jarrett will learn from Keyshawn in his last year in the NFL. Kalil is a small C, but the best in the draft and expert at zone blocking. Johnson is a solid DE who will rotate in to spell the starters. Robinson is much in the mold of Steve Smith. The tiny WR should return kicks day 1 while learning his way into the offense. Rosario is a top notch athlete who is seen a Shannon Sharpe type and also loves playing special teams. Shaw is a consistent run stopper and may replace Morgan at MLB. Wilson was a top college CB who is best suited as a FS in the pros. Patriots = A + Evil Bill is at it again! Randy Moss for just! a 4th rounder is a joke and Moss returning to Pro Bowl form in his quest for a ring is practically a guarantee. Next year, 2 first rounders await! Merriweather is a proto typical Pat. He can play CB or either S position. He won't whack out up in NE either, the vets will keep him on a leash. Brown is a run stuffing DT who will spell Woolfolk. Oldenberg is the typical Pat pick. A huge OT they will take their time developing. Rogers is a big, speedy OLB Vrabel will groom to replace him. Richardson is smart and versatile, able to play CB or S. A Bellichek type of player. Hairston is big and fast at RB. A Patrick Pass clone who will play that role. Hilliard is a leader and is huge and versatile enough to play guard or OT. A cerebral type. Lua is a strong MLB with good pass rushing skills. Elgin is a hard worker and is versatile enough to play C or guard, but is small. Raiders = A+ Da Raiders might just win, baby! Russell will be throwing deep because he has the arm to. Miller will open up the middle because he is a huge TE with good hands. DE Moses was in the top 10 of most pre season mock drafts and will only help make an excellent D stronger. Henderson is a project at OT and will learn from the great Jackie Slater. Higgins is an enigma. The fastest WR in the draft, Al envisions him as the next Cliff Branch. He just may be right. Bush is a big back who has played small thus far. He may stick as a 3rd HB behind Jordan and Rhodes. Bowie will be forever known as the guy traded for Randy Moss. He is a speed merchant at CB and may be given time to develop while on special teams. Richardson is a tall DE with good upside and will need time to develop. Frampton is a hard working SS who will need to stick via special teams. O'Neal is a boom or bust type at FB whose stock has dropped the past few years. Holland is a 4.4 WR. Al loves speed. Great draft by the Maestro! Rams = B Carriker can play anywhere on the D line and excel. Leonards pick signifies a new wrinkle on the O. He may spell Jackson in the 1 back set on occasion, but the 2 set system will be there now with both backs excellent at catching passes. Wade will push for nickel back at the least day 1 and may soon start. Fry has a nasty streak in him at C or guard. Ryan was a DE at Michigan, but will probably move to DT in the NFL. Shackleford is big and can play either guard or T positions. Jackson is a solid DT that doesn't do anything particularly special. Stanley is a tiny WR with 4.4 speed who will have to make it by returning kicks. Ravens = A Ozzie Newsome is probably the best GM in the NFL. He just drafted 2 starting guards after watching his line get depleted a few weeks ago. Grubbs has All Pro potential, while Yanda plays with a nasty streak that will be embraced by McGahee and McNair. Figurs will return kicks and learn how to run routes from a former returner in Mason. Barnes is a pass rush specialist who will help on special teams. McClain starts a FB day 1. Smith will be given every opportunity to replace Boller as McNairs replacement. Burgess will have to make it via special teams. Redskins = A+ Credit them for not withering to Chicago's demands. They'll just get Briggs next year. They held pat and got the best safety since Ed Reed. Landry and Taylor will play off each other perfectly. This pick may insure Taylor staying in DC longer too. Count the trail of bodies they scrape off the turf the next decade as Taylor and Landry may form the best Safety duo in the history of the NFL. Imagine 2 Jack Tatums! Sartz is a tall, thin athlete who may work out as a WLB in time. He should be on the special teams a few years for now. Blades should do fine as a run stuffing SLB who comes out on passing downs. Palmer is another Joe Gibbs project (Jay Schroeder, Stan Humphries, Mark Rypien), a late draft pick given years to learn. Ecker is a huge TE drafted to block, much like a Don Warren. Saints = A - Meachum was rated the best WR in the draft by many. Alleman upgrades the O line and should be a solid guard a long time. Young should start day 1 at CB. Pittman adds depth at RB, a good move and value pick. Bushrod is a real sleeper at OT who may be blocking for Duce and Reggie for years. Jones is a play making ball hawk CB who upgrades the Saints poor secondary. Mitchell is a LB who needs to stick on special teams. Seahawks = A Did great with little to work with. Wilson is the fastest CB in the draft, cerebral and a dangerous returner. He should be a nickel back and return all their kicks day 1. Mebane plays with excellent leverage and will help out in the DT rotation. Atkins can play anywhere on the D line. Wrotto is the ultimate team player, who played DT as a junior due to injuries on the team. He is raw as a guard, but may be valuable in time. Has the tools. Herring is a WLB who may need to stick on special teams. Taylor is strictly a possession type of WR. Kent lettered in 3 varsity sports in one year! A rare achievement! He is raw, but a prospect worth grooming at WR. Vallos is a guard prospect. Steelers = B Tomlin seems to have a plan that we will have to wait and see what it is. Timmons is envisioned to replace Porter. Woodley is a tweener who is a decent pass rusher. Spaeth is tough, smart, big and has great hands for a TE. Sepulveda a huge punter with a huge leg. McBean is a huge DE who can rush the passer. Stephenson is a good guard who will help them in a few years. Gay is a CB who will have to make it on special teams. Baker has the bloodlines, but will need to bulk up to make it at WR. Texans = A I liked their draft! Okoye will team with Williams, Ryans, and a young and up and coming defense that will be respected league wide sooner than you think. Jones is a possible sleeper from little Lane college, who is huge and fast. He and Johnson may form a fantastic WR duo. Bennett is a big CB who will push for a starting job on a team deep in quality CB's. Harrison is a big, athletic SS who needs to get more aggressive. Frye will be a solid RT. Studdard is best suited to play C. Diles is an intelligent tackling machine who might have to play special teams a few years at first. Titans = C + Griffin was drafted ahead of Nelson, which was curious, considering Nelson can cover WR's and Pacman is gone. Still, a solid safety who should help on run support. Henry was a reach, but he is a big, athletic back. Williams will probably be a wasted pick. He plays with no heart and rarely showed his full speed on the field. He plays like he doesn't want to be there. I'd be surprised if he made the team and shocked if he lasted more than a season, but pray he gets into football because he has all the tools. Harris is a C who also can play anywhere on the O line. Davis is a small WR with the knack for the clutch catch. He will return punts in Pacmans absence. Johnson is a quick 2 gap DT. Filani is a big WR who runs the underneath routes with precision. Ford is a tall tweener who needs time to develop a position. Either OLB or a pass rushing DE. Special teams may be his way on to the roster. Smith is a small, but speedy CB who may stick as a nickel back because of Pacmans absence. Otto is an intelligent, mistake free LT did not give up a sack his last 2 years at pass happy Purdue,. Needs more weight room time. Vikings = A Peterson lengthens Taylors career and will give them a devastating 1-2 punch behind that huge O line. A VERY SMART PICK! Rice would've been a top 10 pick next year if he stayed one more year with the ol' ball coach. Lets hope he's not the bust fellow Gamecock Williamson is. McCauley has all the tools at CB and could be special, but has not played the same since suffering a major concussion. Robison is a blue collar type at DE. Allison could be a sleeper at WR. Alexanders stock dropped from a possible 1st rounder to the 6th. A small OLB but he is not short of desire. Thigpen is the 1st player ever drafted from Coastal Carolina. He started all 4 years at QB and might make the roster and given time to develop. Williams is a slight WR who will have to make it as a returner. moreResolved Question: My Draft Grades so far. Grade me if you want?
49ers = A Willis will learn from Mike Singletary, 'Nuff said! Staley will learn from Larry Allen. Hill is a big WR with a nose for the end zone. McDonald will contribute as long as his knees hold up. An excellent job by the 49ers thus far! Bears = A - Olson will be a nice pass catching TE. Bazuin is a blue collar guy who adds depth for run support. Wolfe is a 3rd down back to spell Benson. Okwo will learn while playing special teams for a few years. Solid job thus far. Bengals = C+ Hall is a great pick who will team with Joseph to give them a solid, young CB tandem. This time it is a gamble. Moss will either be a solid edge rusher or miss completely. Crowder is solid, but unspectacular and a reach. Harris was a smart pick to learn from his aging O line mates. The 2nd day most likely will be a better one in Denver. Browns = A Thomas was a no brainer who now helps give the Browns a good looking offensive line. Savage was a savage! McBride is a hard worker who will fill in for Allen while he serves his suspension. A wasted day in KC. Cowboys = B+ Jerry is wheeling and dealing, so the grades higher now than it may end up. Spencer adds depth to a deep, talented LB corp. Martin is a solid offensive lineman who needs a year or 2 to learn. If they fail to address the secondary or WR, this grade drops to a D. Houston is another 1st rounder who allows Williams to go to FS and gives Atlanta a young secondary that may soon be the best in the NFL! Robinson is a big, fast WR who will push the 2 former #1 WR's to either play to their potential or sit. Giants = C - Ross was a fine pick up. Smith will push the aging Toomer. Alford is a pass rushing DT who fits right is with the pass rushing happy DE's. But they still have no left tackle! Amazing! I guess we will get used to seeing Eli on his back more than David Carr ever was this year. They still haven't addressed LB either! Jaguars = A Nice, solid draft thus far! Nelson gives them a top flight FS who can cover WR's easily. Durant is a perfect fit for their scheme and gets to learn from Del Rio. Versatile too. Walker came off a torn ACL to catch over 90 balls. A nice possession type of WR. Jets = B+ Mangini took a cue from his mentor and ran his draft room like a mad scientist. Revis was the top rated CB by many and starts now! Harris is very solid and starts day 1 as well at ILB. They only have 1 pick remaining in the 6th round. Gave up a lot for 2 starters. Which may be just fine! Lions = A - Matt Millen was wheeling and dealing and I'm not sure he is done yet. Young should start at CB day 1. Lions have 6 more picks coming too. Panthers = A Fox had a good draft so far. They had to settle for Beeson, but he will be fine at weak side OLB. Jarrett will learn from Keyshawn in his last year in the NFL. Kalil is a small C, but the best in the draft and expert at zone blocking. Johnson is a solid DE who will rotate in to spell the starters. Patriots = A Evil Bill is at it again! Next year, 2 first rounders await! Merriweather is a proto typical Pat. He can play CB or either S position. He won't wack out up in NE either, the vets will keep him on a leash. What Bill does day 2 with their SEVEN!!! picks is as usual = unknown. Raiders = A Da Raiders might just win, baby! Randy Moss is on the trading block, but he better wise up and beg Al to stay and start working hard again! He would look good next to Porter. Russell would be throwing them the ball at any depth because he has the arm to. Miller would open up the middle because he is a huge TE with good hands. Moses was in the top 10 of most pre season mock drafts and will only help make an excellent D stronger. Henderson is a project at Tackle and will learn from the great Jackie Slater. Higgins is an enigma. The fastest WR in the draft, Al envisions him as the next Cliff Branch. He just may be right. Rams = A+ Great draft thus far. Carriker can play anywhere on the D line and excel. Leonards pick signifies a new wrinkle on the O. He may spell Jackson in the 1 back set on occasion, but the 2 set system will be there now with both backs excellent at catching passes. Tyler was a 1st rounder on many mock drafts and will start day 1. Wade will push for nickel back at the least day 1 and may soon start. Ravens = A Ozzie Newsome is probably the best GM in the NFL. He just drafted 2 starting guards after watching his line get depleted a few weeks ago. Grubbs has All Pro potential, while Yanda plays with a nasty streak that will be embraced by Magahee and McNair. Figurs will return kicks and learn how to run routes from a former returner in Mason. Redskins = A+ They only have one more pick, but credit them for not withering to Chicagos demands. Saints = C - Meachum is a good WR, but they already had Colston, Henderson, Copper and Patten! They NEED CB's! Alleman keeps them from a failing grade as he upgrades the O line and should be a solid guard a long time. Do they expect to get a decent CB day 2? Most are gone. BAD JOB by Sean Payton! Seahawks = A Did great with little to work with. Wilson is the fastest CB in the draft, cerebral and a dangerous returner. He should be a nickel back and return all their kicks day 1. Mebane plays with excellent leverage and will help out in the DT rotation. Steelers = B Tomlin seems to have a plan that we will have to wait and see what it is. Timmons is envisioned to replace Porter. Woodley is a tweener who is a decent pass rusher. Spaeth was confusing, considering they have Miller, but he is tough, smart, big and has great hands. Texans = A I liked their draft thus far! Okoye will team with Williams, Ryans, Babin and a young and up and coming defense that will be respected league wide sooner than you think. Jones is a possible sleeper from little Lane college, who is huge and fast. He and Johnson may form a fantastic WR duo. Titans = C - Griffin was drafted ahead of Nelson, which was curious, considering Nelson can cover WR's and Pacman is gone. Vikings = A + Peterson lengthens Taylors career and will give them a devastating 1-2 punch behind that huge O line. A VERY SMART PICK! Rice would've been a top 10 pick next year if he stayed one more year with the ol' ball coach. Lets hope he's not the bust fellow Gamecock Williamson is. McCauley has all the tools and could be special, but has not played the same since suffering a major concussion. moreResolved Question: More on Julius and Ethel Rosenberg?
Julius Rosenberg (May 12, 1918 – June 19, 1953) and Ethel Greenglass Rosenberg (September 28, 1915 – June 19, 1953) were American Communists who received international attention when they were executed for passing nuclear weapons secrets to the Soviet Union. In the 1990s, Soviet communications decrypted in the VENONA project were released which supported the general allegations of espionage by Julius, though not supporting the specific charges on which the Rosenbergs were convicted. Also supporting the conviction were Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's posthumously published memoirs. He became a leader in the Young Communist League where, in 1936, he met Ethel, whom he married three years later. He graduated from the City College of New York with a degree in electrical engineering in 1939 and in 1940 joined the Army Signal Corps, where he worked on radar equipment. Ethel Greenglass was born on September 28, 1915, in New York City, also to a Jewish family. She was an aspiring actress and singer, but eventually took a secretarial job at a shipping company. She became involved in labor disputes and joined the Young Communist League, where she first met Julius. The Rosenbergs had two sons. According to his former KGB handler, Alexander Feklisov, Julius Rosenberg was originally recruited by the KGB on Labor Day 1942, by former KGB spymaster Semyon Semyonov.[1] Julius had been introduced to Semenov by Bernard Schuster, a high ranking member of the Communist Party USA as well as Earl Browder's personal KGB liaison. After Semenov was recalled to Moscow in 1944, his duties were taken over by his apprentice, Alexander Feklisov.[1] According to Feklisov, Julius was his most dedicated and valuable asset, providing thousands of classified reports from Emerson Radio including a complete proximity fuze, the same design that was used to shoot down Francis Gary Powers's U-2 in 1960. Under Feklisov administration, Julius Rosenberg is said to have recruited sympathetic individuals to the KGB’s service, including Joel Barr, Al Sarant, William Perl and Morton Sobell. [2] According to Feklisov's account, he was supplied by Perl, under Julius Rosenberg’s direction, with thousands of documents from the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics including a complete set of design and production drawings for the Lockheed's P-80 Shooting Star. Feklisov says he learned through Julius that his brother-in-law David Greenglass was working on the top secret Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, and used Julius to recruit him.[1] During World War II, the USSR and the US became allies in war, but the US government was highly suspicious of Joseph Stalin's intentions. As such, the Americans did not share information or seek assistance from the Soviet Union for the Manhattan Project. However, the Soviets were aware of the project as a result of espionage penetration of the US government and had made a number of attempts to infiltrate its operations at the University of California, Berkeley. A number of project members—some high-profile, others lower in rank — did voluntarily give secret information to Soviet agents, many because they were sympathetic to communism[citation needed] (or the Soviet Union's role in the war) and did not feel that the US should have a monopoly on atomic weapons [3] After the war, the US continued to resist efforts to share nuclear secrets, but the Soviet Union was able to produce its own atomic weapons by 1949. Its first nuclear test, "Joe 1", shocked the West in the speed it was produced. It was then discovered in January 1950 that Klaus Fuchs, a German refugee theoretical physicist working for the British mission in the Manhattan Project, had given key documents to the Russians throughout the war. Through Fuchs' confession, US and UK intelligence agents were able to make a case against his "courier", Harry Gold, who was arrested on May 23, 1950. A former machinist at the top-secret Los Alamos laboratory, Sgt. David Greenglass, confessed to having passed secret information on to the USSR through Gold as well. He testified that his sister, Ethel Rosenberg, and her husband, Julius, had also passed secrets. Another accused conspirator, Morton Sobell, fled to Mexico City, but was later deported back to the United States for trial. [edit] Trial and conviction Police photograph of Julius Rosenberg after his arrest. Mugshot of Ethel Rosenberg. The case against the Rosenbergs and Sobell began on March 6, 1951. The prosecution's primary witness, David Greenglass, stated that his sister Ethel typed notes containing US nuclear secrets in the Rosenberg apartment in September 1945. He also asserted that a sketch he made of a cross section of the implosion-type atom bomb (the one dropped on Nagasaki as opposed to the "gun method" triggering device that was in the one dropped on Hiroshima) was also turned over to Julius Rosenberg at that meeting. From the beginning, the trial attracted a high amount of media attention, and like the trial of Alger Hiss, generated a largely polarized response from observers, some of whom believed the Rosenbergs to be clearly guilty, and others who asserted their innocence. Although the notes typed by Ethel apparently contained little that was relevant to the Soviet atomic bomb project, this was sufficient evidence for the grand jury to indict Ethel and enough for the jury to convict on the conspiracy to commit espionage charge. It is believed that part of the reason Ethel was indicted along with Julius was so that the prosecution could use her as a 'lever' to pressure Julius into giving up the names of others who were involved. [4] If that was the case, it did not work. On the witness stand, Julius asserted his right under the Fifth Amendment to not incriminate himself whenever asked about his involvement in the Communist Party or with its members. Ethel did similarly. Neither defendant was viewed sympathetically by the jury. The role played by Assistant United States Attorney Roy Cohn, the prosecutor in the case, is controversial, since Cohn stated in his autobiography that he influenced the selection of the judge, and pushed him to impose the death penalty on both Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. The Rosenbergs were convicted on March 29, 1951, and on April 5 were sentenced to death by Judge Irving Kaufman under section 2 of the Espionage Act, 50 U.S. Code 32 (now 18 U.S. Code 794), which prohibits transmitting or attempting to transmit to a foreign government information "relating to the national defense." The conviction helped to fuel Senator Joseph McCarthy's investigations into anti-American activities by US citizens. While their devotion to the Communist cause was well documented, the Rosenbergs denied the espionage charges even as they faced the electric chair. The couple were the only two American civilians to be executed for espionage-related activity during the Cold War. In imposing the death penalty, Judge Kaufman noted that he held them responsible not only for espionage but also for the deaths of the Korean War: “ I consider your crime worse than murder...I believe your conduct in putting into the hands of the Russians the A-Bomb years before our best scientists predicted Russia would perfect the bomb has already caused, in my opinion, the Communist aggression in Korea, with the resultant casualties exceeding 50,000 and who knows but that millions more of innocent people may pay the price of your treason. Indeed, by your betrayal you undoubtedly have altered the course of history to the disadvantage of our country. No one can say that we do not live in a constant state of tension. We have evidence of your treachery all around us every day for the civilian defense activities throughout the nation are aimed at preparing us for an atom bomb attack.[5] ” Their case has been at the center of the controversy over communism in the United States ever since, with supporters steadfastly maintaining that their conviction was an egregious example of persecution typical of the "hysteria" of those times (see McCarthyism) and likening it to the witch hunts that marred Salem and medieval Europe (a comparison that provided the inspiration for Arthur Miller's critically acclaimed play, The Crucible). At the time, some Americans believed both Rosenbergs were innocent or received too harsh a punishment, and a grass-roots campaign was started to try to stop the couple's execution. Other Americans felt that the couple got what they deserved. Pope Pius XII appealed to President Dwight D. Eisenhower to spare the couple, but he refused on February 11, 1953, and all other appeals were also unsuccessful.[1] [edit] Execution The couple were executed at sundown in the electric chair at Sing Sing in Westchester County, New York, on June 19, 1953(Delayed because of the Rosenbergs appeal to the Court of Appeals, Second Circuit). (Originally scheduled for later in the evening after the start of the Jewish Sabbath, their lawyer, Manny Block, filed a complaint that this offended their Jewish heritage -- so the execution was scheduled before sunset.) Reports of the execution state that Julius died after the first application of electricity, but Ethel did not succumb immediately and was subjected to two more electrical charges before being pronounced dead. The chair was designed for a man of average size; and Ethel Rosenberg was a petite woman: this discrepancy resulted, it is claimed, in the electrodes fitting poorly and making poor electrical contact. Eyewitness testimony (as given by a newsreel report featured in The Atomic Cafe) describes smoke rising from her head. Ethel and Julius Rosenberg are interred at Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn (Suffolk County), New York. [edit] Posthumous revelations In 1995, the National Security Agency publicly released documents from the VENONA project, an effort to decrypt intercepted communications between Soviet agents and the NKVD/KGB. A 1944 cable from New York to Moscow clearly indicates that Julius Rosenberg was engaged in espionage for the Soviet Union, though the importance of his effort is not clear, particularly considering that the Soviets were receiving information on the Atomic bomb from Klaus Fuchs, Donald Maclean and Theodore Hall. Ethel's involvement is not clear from the VENONA transcripts. A document from November 27, 1944 [2] specifically about Ethel lists her as a "fellowcountryman" and claims that she was aware of Julius' work. Ethel was apparently never assigned a code name — the only reference to her states she "does not work." Julius was always referred to as "ANTENNA" or "LIBERAL" — which has cast doubt onto his significance and involvement. In his memoirs, published posthumously in 1990, Nikita Khrushchev praised the pair for their "very significant help in accelerating the production of our atomic bomb." Whether this was in fact the case, however, has been disputed [6] Faced with the VENONA transcripts and periodic revelations from former Soviet intelligence officials and archives, most critiques of the Rosenbergs' prosecution today centers on the usefulness of classified nuclear information provided by the Rosenbergs to the Soviet Union, the severity of their punishment, and the fact that not all Soviet spies were caught, and not all who were caught were prosecuted by the U.S. government. David Greenglass claimed that the atom bomb information believed to be given to the Soviets by Greenglass was quite poor in comparison to the information given by Fuchs, who had a much more intimate understanding of the research being done (revealed by records of Fuchs' detailed transmissions in selective releases from Soviet archives). There was also significant information provided independently of Fuchs by the young scientist Theodore Alvin Hall, as well as a number of other agents, the identities of whom have not yet been fully established. Fuchs's data were the most valuable of all the Soviet atomic spies, giving a range of specific information on everything from nuclear physics details, production of the plants for uranium enrichment, and the exact values for the bomb design itself.[7] However, it was standard Soviet intelligence policy to use several intelligence sources if at all possible, as any information the Rosenbergs provided could serve as a control to check the accuracy of other intelligence.[1] David Greenglass was spared execution in exchange for his testimony. More importantly, his wife, who according to the Venona decrypts was given a code name, was never even indicted. He spent 10 years in prison and was released in 1960, and has lived under an assumed name since his release. Decades later, in late 2001, Greenglass recanted and claimed that he had committed perjury when he testified about the typing activity of his sister Ethel. Greenglass said he chose to falsely testify against his sister in order to protect his wife and children. [edit] Controversy The Rosenberg case has always been a controversial issue, with opinion dividing along ideological lines. There are a number of points of contention which still hold, even after the VENONA revelations. Ethel Rosenberg’s Involvement: While the preponderance of evidence indicates that Julius was involved in Soviet espionage, the record is unclear for Ethel. The VENONA transcripts are ambiguous as to Ethel's involvement, and her brother, David Greenglass, a key prosecution witness, later told his biographer Sam Roberts that he had perjured himself to lessen his own sentence and to help his wife avoid jail time. [3] The Trial: There are many experts who have alleged that the political air of the time, and the seemingly pre-trial held beliefs by Judge Kaufman made it nearly impossible for the Rosenbergs to have had a fair trial by an impartial jury. The Rosenberg lawyer, Emanuel Bloch, also made a number of massive legal blunders (such as moving to impound Exhibit 8--a Greenglass sketch purporting to show a cross section of the implosion-type atom bomb, thereby in effect acquiescing in the prosecution's charge that the sketch was in fact the "secret of the atom bomb" and also not cross-examining Harry Gold, who in later trials was found to be highly unreliable) suggesting either his incompetence or inability to cope with such a high-profile trial. Also, prosecutor Roy Cohn influenced the choice of Kaufman as judge. The Sentence: The imposition of the death sentence upon the Rosenbergs has been the most controversial aspect of the case, as they were sentenced far more harshly than any other "atomic spies." Klaus Fuchs, who spied for many more years than the Rosenbergs, provided far more sensitive nuclear information to the Soviet Union, and was caught, confessed, tried, convicted, and sentenced in the United Kingdom, received 14 years in jail, which was the maximum penalty in that nation for passing military secrets to friendly nations. In 1950 the Rosenbergs' conspiracy charge was prosecuted in the United States in the context of the Cold War and the concurrent Korean War, with Judge Kaufman placing culpability on the couple for the Korean War. It is not clear that the prosecution proved that the Rosenbergs' activities had caused the Korean War, even if they had given the Soviet Union the secret of the atomic bomb. [edit] The Rosenbergs' children The Rosenbergs' two sons, Robert and Michael, were orphaned by the execution, and no relatives dared adopt them for fear of ostracism or worse. They were finally adopted by the songwriter Abel Meeropol and his wife Anne. Abel Meeropol (under the pen name of Lewis Allan) wrote the classic anti-lynching anthem "Strange Fruit," made famous by singer Billie Holiday. He also co-wrote (with Earl Robinson) "The House I Live In", made famous in a short film starring Frank Sinatra to promote the war effort under a theme of tolerance for all types of Americans. (This song has a line referring to "My neighbors white and black" which was omitted from the film and Frank Sinatra's recorded versions. In the film all the characters, even the members of Sinatra's band are white.) Robert and Michael co-wrote a book about the experience, We are Your Sons: The Legacy of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg (1975), and Robert wrote another book in 2004, An Execution in the Family: One Son's Journey. In 1990, Robert founded the Rosenberg Fund for Children, a non-profit foundation which provides support for children whose parents are Leftist activists involved in court cases. Michael's daughter, Ivy Meeropol, directed a 2004 documentary about her grandparents, Heir to an Execution, which was featured at the Sundance Film Festival. Holloway based his assessment of the value of Fuchs's data in particular from the intelligence transcripts and the reactions of key Soviet personnel—especially Igor Kurchatov—to Fuchs' data. The exact use of espionage information by the Soviets was somewhat complicated, due to mutual distrust of the espionage data and the Soviet scientists themselves by Stalin and Beria: see Soviet atomic bomb project for more information. The breeder says, "Earl, all he was trying to tell you was that there are more fucking ducks out there than you can shake a stick at!" moreResolved Question: The money pit?
One can only wonder what would have happened if young Daniel McGinnis had chosen to go exploring somewhere else on that fateful day in the summer of 1795. If he had, perhaps nobody else would have walked the woods on the eastern end of Oak Island for the next ten years. In that time, the clearing McGinnis found might have been reclaimed completely by the woods. In a forest, the thirteen foot-wide depression in the ground might never have been noticed. Thick, leafy branches might have obscured the old tackle block hanging from a branch directly over the pit. Without these markers, there would have been nothing to indicate that this was the work of man. And there might have never been the two-hundred year long treasure hunt that cost several fortunes and many lives. But McGinnis did see the clearing and the depression and the tackle block. Visions of pirate treasure did fill his head. He did return later with two friends, John Smith, age 19, and Anthony Vaughan, age 16. And together, with picks and shovels, they did start perhaps the most famous treasure hunt of modern times. Undoubtedly, the three must have thought they were on the verge of discovering the treasure of Captain William Kidd. Stories that the captain had buried a treasure hoard on an island "east of Boston" had been circulating since the 1600's. Legend had it that a dying sailor in the New England Colonies confessed to being a part of Kidd's notorious crew, but he never named an exact location for the hidden booty. The island McGinnis, Smith and Vaughan were on was one of 300 small isles in the Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada. It was peanut-shaped and about three-quarters of a mile long and 1,000 feet wide. Cutting away the smaller trees, the three young men started digging in the depression. After two feet they hit a floor of carefully laid flagstones. This type of slate was not found on the island and the group figured it had been brought there from about two miles north. Below the stones they saw that they were digging down a shaft that had been refilled. The walls of the shaft were scored with the marks of pick axes, more evidence that this structure was the work of men. At the ten foot level they hit wood. At first the group figured they'd hit a treasure chest, but quickly realized that they had found a platform of oaken logs sunk into the sides of the shaft. Pulling up the logs they discovered a two-foot depression and more of the shaft. Continuing to dig, they finally reached a depth of twenty-five feet. At that depth they decided they could not continue without more help and better planning. Covering the pit over, they left. One thing the three were sure of, though, was that something must be at the bottom of the pit. They concluded that nobody would have gone to the trouble of digging a shaft deeper than 25 feet unless he had something very valuable to hide. Nineteenth Century Excavations Not much more was done with the pit until around 1802. While stories differ, it seems likely that the three spent the previous years searching for a financial backer to provide assistance for a more sophisticated dig. Simeon Lynds visited the money pit that year, was impressed by the story, and formed a company to support the excavation. The work was started in the summer of 1803. After cleaning out the old pit, the crew started digging downward. Stories have it that they struck another oak platform at 30 feet below the surface. As they continued to dig they found something every ten feet: charcoal, putty, stones or more log platforms. Finally, at the 80 or 90 foot level, depending on which historical account you read, a flat stone, three feet long and one foot wide, with strange letters and figures cut into it, was found. At 93 feet deep, the floor of the pit began to turn into soft mud. Before the end of that day the crew probed the bottom of the shaft with a crowbar hoping to find something. They hit a barrier as wide and as long as the shaft. The group speculated that they'd finally reached the treasure vault and went to bed with the expectations that tomorrow a fortune would be theirs. Returning the next day, the crew was shocked to find that overnight the pit had filled with 60 feet of water. Bailing was useless. As soon as water was removed from the pit, more flowed in to take its place. An attempt was made to dig another shaft nearby and get at the treasure by running a tunnel underneath the pit, but the new shaft flooded as soon as the tunnel got close to its objective. Another attempt to find the treasure wasn't made until 1849. A new corporation was formed to finance the dig. This group wasn't much more successful, running into the same flooding problems that occurred back in 1802. They did manage to use a drill to probe what was below the money pit floor. A platform was constructed in the shaft just above the water level and the drill operated from there. The drill seemed to bore through levels of oak, spruce and clay. One sample recovered what appeared to be several links of chain made of gold. While the drilling was going on, someone noticed that the water in the pit was salty and rose and fell with the tide. This led to speculation that the builders of the pit had conceived a clever trap designed to flood the pit with water if someone got to close too the treasure. The existence of the flood trap was confirmed by the discovery that the beach of Smith's Cove, located some 500 feet away from the money pit, was artificial. Examination showed that the original clay of the cove had been dug away and in its place laid round beach stones, covered by four or five inches of dead eel grass, which was covered by coconut fiber two inches thick and finally the sand of the beach. At the bottom of all this were five box drains that apparently merged somewhere well back from the coast into a single tunnel that ran the distance to the money pit. The system was apparently designed so that the filtering action of the coconut fiber and the eel grass would ensure the drains would never be clogged by sand or gravel from the beach. It worked well. Attempts were made to put the flood trap out of business by building a cofferdam around the cove to by holding the tides back. Later, pits were dug to intersect and plug the tunnel on its route to the money pit. These failed, and this try at reaching the treasure was given up in 1851 when the money ran out. The next attempt in 1861 cost the first human life. The searchers tried to pump out the money pit using the steam engine-powered pumps. A boiler burst and one worker was scalded to death while others were injured. Further fatalities were barely avoided when the money pit's bottom, weakened by attempts to get at the treasure by digging up underneath from other shafts, collapsed. If there were any treasure chests they were probably carried much deeper by this crash. This dig did succeed in discovering where the flood tunnel entered the money pit, but there was still no way to turn off the water. By 1864 these searchers were also out of money. In 1866, 1893, 1909, 1931 and 1936 additional excavations were started. Extreme methods were used including setting dynamite charges to destroy the flood tunnel, building a dam to keep the water out of Smith's Cove, and bringing in a crane with an excavation bucket. None of these approaches recovered a single coin while costing the backers a small fortune and one worker his life. One of these efforts did manage to block off the flood tunnel from Smith's Cove, only to discover more water was pouring in from the opposite direction via a natural or man-made route from the south shore. Drilling also indicated that there might be some kind of cement vault at the 153-foot level. By this time the south end of the island was full of old shafts, though, and it was increasingly hard to tell were the original money pit was located. Searchers often ran out of money just trying to figure out where the old shaft had been. Modern Excavations In 1959 Robert Restall, a former daredevil motorcyclist, took up the challenge with the help of his 18-year-old son. By then the Smith Cove's flood tunnel had become unblocked and Restall made it his first order of business to seal it off. He had sunk a shaft to the depth of 27 feet near Smith's Cove when tragedy struck. His son found him laying at the bottom of the pit in muddy water. Climbing down to help his father, the boy suddenly fell off the ladder and lay next to him. Kal Graseser, Restall's partner, and workers Cyril Hiltz and Andy DeMont climbed down to assist, but also collapsed before reaching the bottom. Edward White, a visiting fireman from Buffalo, New York, immediately suspected carbon monoxide poisoning from the exhaust of a nearby gasoline pump and descended the pit with a rope tied around his waist. He was able to rescue DeMont, but the others died. In one day Oak Island mystery claimed four more lives. In 1965 Robert Dunfield tried to apply modern open pit mining methods to the treasure hunt. Using a 70-ton digging crane he dug a hole at the original pit site 140 feet deep and 100 feet in diameter. The dirt was carefully sifted for any treasure, but only a few pieces of porcelain dishware were found. Heavy rains dragged the work out for months and Dunfield ran out of money. The pit, and its mystery designer, had won again. The Money Pit today. (Courtesy of Bill Milstead) In 1970 the Triton Alliance was formed to continue looking for the treasure. Legal battles between owners of different portions of the island resulted in slow progress. A number of holes were drilled in an attempt to locate the treasure and better understand the geological nature of the island, but no gold was recovered. Little work has been done in the area of the money pit itself as the soil is unstable. Often caverns, thought to be natural, have been found beneath the island. A video camera lowered down one borehole into one of these spaces recorded an image that looked like chests and a human hand severed at the wrist. The quality of the images was so poor, though, that positive identification was impossible. Triton brought the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in to survey the island in 1995 and render an opinion on whether there is something valuable at the bottom of the pit. While their report is confidential, people who have seen it say that its conclusions are "not discouraging." Currently little work is being done on the island while disputes between the owners of Triton are being settled. In addition to the money pit the rest of the island seems to be loaded with old stone markers of various types. The most peculiar of these are 6 boulders that seem to be laid out in the shape of a cross that is almost 900 feet long. Some wild speculation based on the cross suggest that Oak Island might be home to the long missing Holy Grail, but there is no real solid evidence to support this idea. Possible Culprits So, who built the money pit? And did they really put some kind of treasure down there? Was it Captain Kidd? Despite the legends it seem unlikely that Captain William Kidd ever had the chance to bury a treasure on Oak Island. He spent little time near Nova Scotia and certainly not enough to construct the money pit. Kidd did bury a cache of booty on Gardener's Island near the eastern end of Long Island Sound, but it was quickly seized by the Governor of New York. Blackbeard, who possessed perhaps the most notorious reputation of all pirates, has sometimes been mentioned in conjunction with Oak Island, but only because he once boasted he had an underground cache for his treasure, "where none but Satan and myself can find it." Certainly many of the Oak Island treasure hunters would agree that this sounds like the money pit, but the truth is there isn't any evidence that Blackbeard conducted any operations north of Delaware. In fact, it seems very unlikely that any pirate could be responsible for such a complex labyrinth as the pit. Pirates buried treasure because it offered a quick way to hide and recover their goods. A digging operation that must have taken several months just doesn't seem their style. George Bates, a land surveyor in Nova Scotia, suggested that pirates had indeed built structures on Oak Island, but not for the purpose of hiding treasure. Bate's idea was that there was enough pirate activity between 1650 and 1750 off the coast of Nova Scotia to warrant several pirate groups getting together and building a dry dock to maintain their ships. To do this they sailed their vessels into Smith's Cove and built a cofferdam to seal the tiny bay off from the ocean. The flood tunnel was used to then drain the cove and leave the ship high and dry. The water flooded down the tunnel into a large natural cave underneath the island. A windmill located on top of the money pit extracted the water so the cove could again be drained for the next ship. The weakness of Bates argument is that located on the other side of Nova Scotia, only a hundred miles away, is the Bay of Fundy. The tides in the bay drop at least 30 feet each day making it a huge natural dry dock. Why would the pirates duplicate what nature already provided? Speaking of nature, is it possible that the money pit is a natural phenomena, not a cleverly designed vault? Certainly there are natural caves under Oak Island and the depression found by McGinnis could have been a sink hole. Unless all early accounts are completely incorrect the descriptions of the platforms carefully placed at 10-foot intervals seem to ensure that at least part of the structure is man-made. Some theories suggest that the structures built on Oak Island may have been hundreds, perhaps even thousand of years old when they were discovered in 1795. They may have been built by Vikings visiting the New World, or by the native Micmac people who lived in the region before the Europeans appeared. Perhaps they were built by an advanced civilization that we know nothing about. Indeed the flood tunnel trap built into the pit in some ways reminds one of the false doors and granite plugs found in Egyptian tombs to prevent grave robbing. If any of the above theories were true why did McGinnis discover the pit in the heart of a clearing? The trees around the money pit must have been cut when it was constructed. Given the rate oak trees grow, that meant someone had built the pit not more than fifty years before McGinnis stumbled across it. Who would have hidden a treasure between 1745 and 1795? William Crooker, author of several books on the Oak Island mystery, suggests that the pit was built as a part of plot by King George III of England and several of his close advisors. On August 12, 1762, British forces captured the city of Havana, Cuba, from the Spanish. Havana was a rich, important city where much of the gold from the New World was shipped back to Spain. Two shiploads of the captured booty, Crooker suggests, was taken by the Earl of Albemarle to Oak Island. Previously the conspirators had arranged for military engineers to come to the island and build what they thought was a secret ammo dump complete with flood tunnels. Albemarle arrived with the treasure in sealed boxes. The treasure was placed in the pit, the pit was closed, and the engineers departed still thinking they had built an ammo dump. Albemarle returned to England with the idea of retrieving the treasure later. Something, perhaps the madness that afflicted King George toward the end of his life, prevented getting the booty and it was forgotten about. Crooker's theory raises another possibility, though. Suppose there is no treasure at all and the pit is simply an old ammo dump? We will only find out for sure when someone comes along who is clever enough, and rich enough, to beat the designer of the money pit and make a thorough investigation of what lies at the bottom. moreResolved Question: Earl Pennington Died in May or June 1991?
